The common perception is that velvet is fragile. That is true for silk velvet. But polyester velvet is a different story. Polyester fibres are naturally strong, stain-resistant, and easy to care for. The dense pile structure also makes the fabric more resistant to wear than many flat woven fabrics – the pile fibres absorb friction before the base weave is affected. This is why most commercial-grade upholstery velvets are made from 100% polyester.
● The Martindale number – what it actually means.
Martindale is the industry standard for measuring abrasion resistance. It tests how many times a fabric can be rubbed before it shows signs of wear. To put the numbers in perspective: 15,000 cycles is considered heavy-duty residential use. 30,000 is commercial grade. Our velvet starts at 35,000 cycles and goes up to 100,000+ – well above the threshold for any domestic application . For a family sofa that sees daily use, you want at least 35,000.

For projects that require extreme durability – hotels, theatres, high-end commercial spaces. The UL 94 V-0 flame rating is self-extinguishing, the highest standard for fire safety. Water resistance is 750mm, meaning the fabric actively repels liquids.
Care & Maintenance

● Vacuum regularly.
Use a soft brush attachment on low suction to remove dust and debris from the pile. Aim for weekly vacuuming, or more frequently in homes with pets. Pet hair sits on the surface of velvet and is easily removed with a lint roller.
● Rotate cushions.
If your sofa design allows it, rotate cushions regularly to ensure even wear across the seating surface.
● Protect from direct sunlight.
Polyester is more UV-resistant than natural fibres, but prolonged direct sunlight will still cause fading over time. Position furniture away from windows where possible.
