Why This Polyester Velvet Upholstery Fabric Works
Let me walk you through what makes this fabric different - and why it is the right choice for furniture upholstery.
● Why velvet for upholstery.
Velvet adds a level of visual richness that flat woven fabrics cannot match. The pile catches the light differently depending on the angle, which gives the fabric depth and movement. It feels luxurious to the touch - people want to sit on it. But traditional velvet has a reputation for being delicate. Silk velvet crushes easily, stains badly, and requires professional cleaning. Cotton velvet is more durable but still prone to fading and staining. Polyester velvet solves these problems. It gives you the look and feel of velvet without the maintenance headaches. That is why we carry this Polyester Velvet Upholstery Fabric.

● Why knitted, not woven.
Most upholstery fabrics are woven. Woven construction is stable and durable, but it does not stretch. If you are covering a curved sofa or an armchair with rounded arms, woven fabric fights the shape. It puckers, it pulls, and it takes extra work to get a smooth finish. Knitted velvet, on the other hand, has natural flexibility. It conforms to curves more easily, which means less waste and less labor on the production line . The knit construction also gives the fabric better tear resistance - the interlocking loops distribute stress more evenly than woven yarns.
● Why 320 GSM.
At 320 GSM, this fabric is heavy enough to hold up to daily use but not so heavy that it becomes difficult to sew. The weight gives the fabric a substantial, quality feel - it does not look or feel cheap. The dense pile also helps hide minor wear and tear, which means the fabric stays looking good longer. For comparison, standard upholstery velvet typically ranges from 250-350 GSM. We settled at 320 because it works well for both residential and light commercial applications.
● What the pile does.
The pile is the raised surface of the velvet. Our fabric has a dense, plush pile that feels soft and smooth to the touch. The pile also gives the fabric its characteristic sheen - the fibers reflect light differently depending on the angle, creating a rich, dimensional look. The pile is dense enough to resist crushing, so the fabric maintains its appearance over time.
● Durability - what the numbers actually mean.
This fabric achieves 50,000+ double rubs on the Wyzenbeek abrasion test . To put that in perspective: 15,000 double rubs is considered "heavy duty" for residential use. 30,000 is commercial grade. 50,000 is the kind of durability you expect from high-end contract furniture - hotels, restaurants, offices. This means the fabric holds up to daily use without wearing thin on the seating surface. The fabric also meets CAL 117 and NFPA 260 flame retardancy standards, so it is safe for residential and commercial use.
● What our customers are actually using it for.
The range is broad. Furniture makers use this Polyester Velvet Upholstery Fabric for sofas, armchairs, and ottomans - the velvet look gives their pieces a premium feel, and the durability means fewer warranty claims. Interior designers use it for headboards and accent chairs - the fabric adds texture and warmth to a room. We even have a few hotel projects using it for lobby seating and guest room furniture - the fabric holds up to heavy use and cleans up well.

Production & Ordering Details
● Stock colors.
We keep 20 stock colors for this Polyester Velvet Upholstery Fabric. The range includes classic neutrals - charcoal, navy, black, beige, taupe, cream - and a selection of bolder shades - emerald, ruby, mustard, blush. The velvet pile takes dye evenly, so the colors come out rich and consistent.
● Custom colors.
We do custom colors for this fabric. If you have a Pantone number, a physical reference, or even a photo of the color you want, we can match it. Our dye house runs small batches for sample approval before full production.
● Custom width.
150 cm is our standard. The knitted construction gives us some flexibility on width. If your cutting patterns work better with a different width, we can adjust. Just tell us what you need.
● MOQ and pricing.
Our regular MOQ is 500 meters per color. Velvet fabric costs more than standard upholstery fabric because the pile construction requires more yarn and more processing. But the look, feel, and durability justify the difference. If your order volume is smaller, talk to us - we sometimes split quantities for customers testing new colors or running limited collections.
● Delivery timeline.
From deposit confirmation to shipment, we usually deliver within 15-20 working days. This includes knitting, dyeing, finishing, and packing. Velvet requires careful handling during finishing to preserve the pile, but our timeline is consistent with our standard upholstery products.

Sampling Policy
● Standard samples.
A4-size cuttings of existing stock colors are free. You just pay the shipping cost. If you have your own courier account with FedEx, DHL, or TNT, we can ship using your account.
● Custom samples.
If you want a specific color matched before you place the full order, there is a sample charge. That covers the dyeing setup and the production of a small batch. We deduct that sample charge from your final order if you go ahead with production.

FAQ
These are actual questions buyers have asked us about this Polyester Velvet Upholstery Fabric.
Q1: Is this fabric durable enough for everyday use on a sofa?
A1: Yes. This fabric achieves 50,000+ double rubs on the Wyzenbeek abrasion test - well above the industry standard for residential upholstery . The knitted construction and dense pile also help the fabric resist crushing and wear. We have customers using it for family room sofas that see daily use, and the fabric holds up well.
Q2: How does polyester velvet compare to cotton or silk velvet?
A2: Polyester velvet is more durable, more stain-resistant, and easier to clean than cotton or silk velvet . It also costs significantly less. The trade-off is that polyester is slightly less breathable than natural fibers, but for upholstery, that is rarely an issue. The look and feel are comparable - the dense pile gives it the same luxurious texture and sheen.
Q3: Is this fabric easy to clean?
A3: That's right. Polyester threads naturally repel stains, and they won't soak up liquid like natural textiles tend to. Most minor spills can simply be wiped away with a damp rag and gentle soap.
This material carries an S cleaning symbol, meaning only solvent cleaners are suitable-water-based cleaners aren't allowed. For regular light stain removal stick to spot treatments, and call in a professional upholstery cleaner for thorough deep cleaning later on. Never scrub the velvet pile harshly; dab stains gently instead. Also remember to test any cleaning product on a hidden corner of the fabric beforehand to avoid discoloration.
Q4: Does the velvet crush or flatten over time?
A4: The dense pile and 320 GSM weight help the fabric resist crushing. It is more resilient than lighter velvets. That said, all velvet will show some pile compression on high-use areas like the seat cushion over time. Regular vacuuming with a soft brush attachment can help lift the pile and keep the fabric looking fresh. We also recommend rotating cushions if your sofa design allows it.
Q5: What is the MOQ for this fabric?
A5: Our regular MOQ is 500 meters per color. That is the standard for production runs. But we keep stock on the more popular colors, and for those, we can sometimes accept orders from 100 meters upward. For sampling, we send A4 cuttings free of charge.
Q6: Can I order a physical color card?
A6: Yes - and we recommend it. Screens cannot show the true texture and sheen of velvet. The pile catches light differently depending on the angle, and that effect is impossible to judge from a monitor. We keep physical swatch rings for all 20 stock colors. They are free to request. You just cover the shipping fee.
Q7: Can I get a custom color matched?
A7: Yes. We do custom color matching regularly. You send us a reference - Pantone number, physical swatch, or even a photo with good lighting - and our dye house matches it. The sample charge applies for custom colors, but we deduct it from the final order.
Q8: Is there any stretch in this fabric?
A8: Yes, some. The knitted construction gives the fabric natural flexibility - not as much as a spandex-blend fabric, but more than woven upholstery fabrics. This makes it easier to fit over curved furniture frames without puckering or pulling . The fabric does not have a high percentage of stretch, but the give is noticeable when you are working with it.
Q9: Does this fabric meet fire safety standards?
A9: Yes. The fabric meets CAL 117 and NFPA 260 standards for flame retardancy . This makes it suitable for both residential and commercial upholstery applications. We can provide the test documentation on request.
Q10: How do you pack and ship this fabric?
A10: Our default packing method is roll packaging, each roll wrapped in plastic sheeting to ward off dampness and dust. Velvet fabric needs extra care when being rolled up to stop its pile from getting flattened; we place layers of tissue paper in between to shield the fabric surface. Should you need custom packing solutions-such as carton packaging, custom wrapping materials or bespoke labeling-we're able to accommodate all those requests. All shipments depart from either Shanghai Port or Ningbo Port.
