Poly Velour Fabric

100% Polyester Warp Knitted Fabric For Apparel, Home Textile & Upholstery
Velour and velvet are often confused, but they are not the same thing. Velvet has a cut pile with a smooth, dense surface. Velour – the name comes from the French word for "velvet" – is a knitted pile fabric with a longer, softer, more upright pile, typically ranging from 2 to 4 mm in length . It has a plush, almost fleece-like feel that makes it incredibly comfortable to the touch.
Our Poly Velour Fabric is produced using warp knitting technology on high-speed tricot machines like the HKS 3-M, a standard in the industry for this type of fabric. The warp-knitted construction gives the fabric dimensional stability and exceptional pull-out resistance – the pile is firmly tied into the ground by stitches, so it does not shed or pull loose easily.

What Makes Warp-Knitted Velour Different

Let me walk you through what velour is, how it is made, and why the warp-knitted version is worth paying attention to.

● Velour vs. velvet – what is the difference?

Velvet is woven and has a short, dense cut pile – typically up to 2 mm. Velour is knitted and has a longer pile – generally 2 to 4 mm . The longer pile gives velour a softer, more plush feel, almost like a fleece. Velour also has more give because it is knitted, making it more comfortable for clothing. Velvet is more formal and structured; velour is casual and comfortable.

● How warp-knitted velour is made.

Our Poly Velour Fabric is produced on warp knitting machines, typically the HKS 3-M in E28 gauge, developed by Karl Mayer . The process works like this: the machine knits a dense base fabric with long underlaps – these are the extended yarns that run across the back of the fabric. During finishing, these underlaps are raised using a brushing or raising process. The raised fibres are then sheared to create a uniform, upright pile surface.

● Upright velour – why the pile direction matters.
Unlike some velvets that can be stroked in one direction (tilting velour), upright velour has fibres that stand straight up . That means the surface looks consistent from any angle, with a matt, velvety shimmer. The cut surfaces of the vertical fibres determine the appearance – not the peripheral surfaces of the filaments . This gives the fabric a full, dense feel that does not change depending on how you look at it.

● Pull-out resistance – a key advantage of warp knitting.
This is one of the biggest technical advantages of warp-knitted velour. The pile-forming layer is firmly tied into the ground by stitches, so the fibres do not pull out easily . This is why warp-knitted velour is used for soft toys and children's products in many countries – the pull-out resistance is a safety requirement . For upholstery, it means the fabric does not shed or lose its pile over time.

● Spandex options for stretch.
Some versions of this fabric include spandex – typically around 4-5% – to give the fabric gentle stretch and better drape . This is popular for apparel applications where comfort and fit matter. Stretch velour is used for evening wear, loungewear, and fitted garments.

FAQ

Q1: What is the difference between velour and velvet?

A1: Velvet is a woven cut-pile fabric with a short, dense pile (typically up to 2 mm). Velour is a knitted pile fabric with a longer pile (2-4 mm) and a softer, more plush feel . Velour also has some stretch because it is knitted, making it more comfortable for clothing.

Q2: How is warp-knitted velour made?

A2: The fabric is knitted on a warp knitting machine (typically HKS 3-M) with long underlaps. During finishing, these underlaps are raised using brushing, then sheared to create a uniform upright pile surface.

Q3: Is this fabric durable?

A3: Yes. The warp-knitted construction gives the fabric excellent pull-out resistance – the pile is firmly tied into the ground by stitches and does not shed easily . This makes it suitable for upholstery, toys, and other applications where durability matters.

Q4: What weights are available?

A4: We offer this fabric from 120 GSM up to 280 GSM . Lighter weights (120-220 GSM) are used for apparel; heavier weights (220-280 GSM) are used for upholstery, home textiles, and toys.

Q5: Can I get this fabric with stretch?

A5: Yes. We offer versions with 4-5% spandex that give the fabric gentle stretch and better drape . Stretch velour is popular for evening wear, loungewear, and fitted garments.

Q6: What is the MOQ?

A6: 500 metres per colour for solid colours; 1000 metres for printed versions . We can sometimes accept smaller quantities for stock colours – ask us.

Q7: Can I order a physical colour card?

A7: Yes – and we recommend it. Screens cannot show the true pile texture and sheen of velour accurately. We keep swatch rings for our stock colours. Free to request – you cover shipping.

Q8: What is the lead time?

A8: 15-25 working days after deposit confirmation.

Q9: Is the fabric easy to care for?

A9: Yes. 100% polyester is machine-washable, shrink-resistant, and colourfast. For removable covers, wash cold (30°C), gentle cycle, with mild detergent. Do not use bleach. Tumble dry low or hang dry. Iron on the reverse side with a cool iron.
