Technical Parameters

100% rPET Warp Knitted Upholstery & Apparel Fabric

Sustainability is no longer a niche selling point - it is what buyers expect. And when it comes to velvet, the challenge has always been finding something that looks luxurious, performs well, and actually delivers on the eco-friendly promise.

That is exactly what our Recycled Velvet Fabric offers.

This is a 100% recycled polyester velvet, made from post-consumer PET bottles and industrial polyester waste. The bottles are cleaned, broken down, extruded into new fiber, and spun into yarn - all without compromising the quality or feel of the finished fabric . The result is a velvet that has the same plush pile, soft sheen, and durability as virgin polyester velvet, but with a fraction of the environmental footprint.

The fabric is warp-knitted, which gives it dimensional stability and tear resistance - key qualities for upholstery that has to hold up to daily use . The pile is dense and upright, with a subtle sheen that catches the light beautifully. It is available in a range of weights: lighter versions (around 247 GSM) for apparel and curtains, and heavier versions (up to 410 GSM) for sofa upholstery and commercial furniture.

We hold GRS (Global Recycled Standard) certification for this fabric, and it is also OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified, so it is safe for direct skin contact . We offer it in a broad range of stock colours, with custom colour matching and finishes - embossed, printed, or EasyClean treatments - available upon request.

What Makes This Recycled Velvet Different

Let me walk you through what this fabric actually is - and what it is not.

● Where the material comes from.

This is not virgin polyester. The yarn is made from recycled PET bottles and post-industrial polyester waste. The bottles are cleaned, broken down, extruded into new fiber, and spun into yarn . The quality is consistent - you do not get weak spots or uneven texture because the recycling process is tightly controlled. We work with GRS-certified suppliers who run the material through multiple quality checks before it ever reaches our knitting machines.

What GRS certification actually means.

GRS is not just a sticker. To get certified, the entire supply chain is audited - from the recycling facility to our factory. The auditors verify the recycled content percentage, check water and chemical usage, and review working conditions . When we say this Recycled Velvet Fabric is GRS-certified, we mean the paperwork exists, the audits happened, and the product is trackable. We can provide the certificate on request.

How it performs compared to virgin polyester.

This is the question we get most often. The answer is: it performs the same, sometimes better. The recycled fiber is engineered to match virgin polyester in tensile strength, abrasion resistance, and dye uptake . In fact, the fabric is tested to withstand 35,000 to 150,000+ Martindale cycles, which is well above the industry standard for heavy residential and commercial upholstery.

What the pile feels like.

The pile in this velvet is upright and dense - the cut fibres stand straight up rather than tilting in one direction. That means the fabric has a consistent, plush surface that looks the same from any angle . The hand-feel is soft and luxurious, with a subtle sheen that catches the light. Despite the recycled origin, there is no compromise on texture - it feels like premium velvet.

EasyClean and other finishes.

We offer this fabric with an EasyClean finish on some versions, which makes it stain-resistant and easier to maintain . This is particularly useful for upholstery in homes with children or pets. The fabric is also machine-washable on a gentle cycle (30°C) for removable covers . No bleach, no tumble drying - just gentle care and it stays looking new.

What our customers are using it for.

The range is broad. Furniture makers use this Recycled Velvet Fabric for sofas and armchairs - the sustainability story gives them a selling point for their showrooms, and the durability means fewer warranty claims . Interior designers use it for curtains and cushions - the fabric adds warmth and texture to a room, and the eco-angle appeals to their clients . Apparel brands use lighter-weight versions for dresses, jackets, and accessories.

Production & Ordering Details

Stock colours.

We keep a wide selection of stock colours - neutrals (black, charcoal, navy, beige, cream, taupe) and a range of fashion shades (petrol, rose quartz, dark green, mustard, indigo, musk). The exact palette varies by weight and finish, so ask us for the current list.

Custom colours.

We match Pantone colours. Send us the number, we run a small dye batch for your approval, then go into full production. Custom colour sample fee applies - deducted from your final order.

Custom width.

140-150 cm is standard for most weights. Some versions are available in widths up to 300 cm for drapery applications . Width can be adjusted if your cutting patterns require it.

MOQ.

The MOQ for recycled velvet varies by weight and finish. Standard plain velvet usually starts at 500 metres per colour. Custom finishes (EasyClean, embossed, printed) may have higher MOQs because of the additional setup. For stock colours, we can sometimes accept smaller orders. Sample cuttings (A4 size) are free - you pay shipping.

Lead time.

15-30 working days from deposit confirmation to shipment, depending on the finish and quantity. Plain velvet is faster; custom finishes take longer.

Packing.

Standard packing is in rolls with a plastic bag to protect against moisture and dust. Velvet requires careful rolling to avoid pile crushing. We ship from Shanghai or Ningbo port.

FAQ

These are actual questions buyers have asked us about recycled velvet.

Q1: Is this fabric genuinely recycled, or is it just marketed that way?

A1: Genuine. We hold GRS certification for this Recycled Velvet Fabric. The certification requires third-party audits of the entire supply chain - from the recycling facility to our production line . We can provide the certificate and audit documentation on request. The recycled content is verified, not just claimed.

Q2: How does recycled polyester velvet compare to virgin polyester velvet in terms of quality?

A2: Practically identical. The recycled fiber is engineered to match virgin polyester in strength, durability, and dye uptake . The fabric is tested to withstand 35,000 to 150,000+ Martindale cycles, which is well above industry standards for residential and commercial upholstery . You are not sacrificing quality for sustainability.

Q3: What certifications do you hold for this product?

A3: We hold GRS (Global Recycled Standard) and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certifications for this fabric . GRS verifies the recycled content and supply chain. OEKO-TEX confirms the fabric is free from harmful substances and safe for skin contact . Both are third-party verified.

Q4: Is this fabric durable enough for sofa upholstery?

A4: Yes. The 280-350 GSM versions are ideal for residential sofas. The abrasion resistance ranges from 35,000 to 100,000+ Martindale cycles, which is well above the 15,000-30,000 cycles typically required for heavy residential use . For commercial furniture, we offer heavier versions (350-410+ GSM) that hold up even better.

Q5: Is the fabric easy to clean?

A5: Yes. Some versions come with an EasyClean finish that makes the fabric stain-resistant . The 100% polyester content means the fabric does not absorb moisture the way natural fibres do - most spills can be cleaned with a damp cloth and mild detergent. For removable covers, the fabric is machine-washable at 30°C on a gentle cycle . Do not use bleach, do not tumble dry.

Q6: What is the MOQ for this fabric?

A6: For standard plain velvet, the MOQ is typically 500 metres per colour. For custom finishes (EasyClean, embossed, printed) or custom colours, MOQs may be higher. We keep stock on popular colours and can sometimes accept smaller quantities - ask us.

Q7: Can I order a physical colour card?

A7: Yes - and we recommend it. Screens cannot show the true pile texture and sheen of velvet accurately. We keep swatch rings for our standard colour range. Free to request, you cover shipping.

Q8: Can I get a custom colour matched?

A8: Yes. Send us a reference - Pantone number, physical swatch, or photo - and our dye house matches it. Sample charge applies but is deducted from the final order.

Q9: Does this fabric meet fire safety standards?

A9: Versions are available that meet CAL TB 117 and other flame retardancy standards - specify your requirement when ordering. Documentation is available on request.

Q10: How should I care for this fabric?

A10: For spot cleaning, use a damp cloth with mild detergent and blot (do not rub). For removable covers, machine wash cold (30°C), gentle cycle, with mild detergent. Do not use bleach. Do not tumble dry - hang dry or dry flat. Iron on the reverse side with a cool iron . Avoid direct sunlight to prevent fading.
