Elastic Velvet Fabric
Elastic Velvet Fabric stands out from regular velvet materials, which often appear high-end yet come with a stiff, unyielding texture. Typical velvet’s thick, fuzzy surface delivers an upscale aesthetic, yet its zero stretch creates discomfort when worn as apparel and makes covering contoured furniture a tricky task—and our fabric was engineered to fix all these common drawbacks.
This is a warpknitted velvet with spandex blended into the yarn structure. The combination of warp knitting and spandex gives you the best of both worlds: the soft, plush pile and subtle sheen of velvet, plus genuine 4-way stretch that moves with you. The stretch is permanent because the spandex is part of the yarn, not a surface finish – it does not wash out.

What Makes Warp-Knitted Elastic Velvet Different
Let me walk you through what this fabric is and why the warp-knitted + spandex combination matters.
● Warp knitting vs. weft knitting.
Most knitted velvets are weft-knitted – they stretch easily, but they can lose shape over time and are prone to snagging. Warp knitting, by contrast, interlocks yarns vertically in a loop structure that does not unravel and resists distortion . The pile is firmly tied into the ground structure, giving the fabric excellent tear resistance and pull-out resistance – the fibres do not shed or pull loose easily. This is why warp-knitted velvet is the preferred choice for upholstery and high-use garments.

● How the stretch works.
The spandex is woven into the fabric during the knitting process – not applied as a finish . The result is a fabric with 15-30% 4-way stretch (depending on the spandex content) . Unlike coated stretch finishes that degrade over time, this stretch is permanent. It does not wash out, and it does not lose its recovery.
● What the pile feels like.
The pile in this elastic velvet is upright and dense – the cut fibres stand straight up rather than tilting in one direction. The surface is soft and smooth to the touch, with a subtle sheen that catches the light . Despite the stretch, the pile does not thin out – the warp-knitted structure supports the fibres and keeps the velvet looking full.
● Pilling resistance.
This fabric achieves a high pilling resistance rating (Grade 4+ on the ISO scale) . The warp-knitted loop structure locks the fibres in place, preventing them from working their way to the surface and tangling up into fuzz balls. This is particularly important for fabrics that are exposed to friction – like upholstery and activewear.
● What our customers are using it for.
Apparel brands use this fabric for dresses, jackets, and loungewear – the stretch makes the garments comfortable, and the velvet adds a premium look . Sportswear makers use it for athleisure and yoga wear – the 4-way stretch and breathability make it functional . Furniture makers use it for sofas and cushions – the stretch makes it easier to fit over curved frames, and the warp-knitted construction means it holds its shape over time . We also have customers using it for car interiors and toys.

FAQ
Q1: How much stretch does this fabric have?
A1: It has 15-30% 4-way stretch, depending on the spandex content . The stretch is permanent because the spandex is woven into the yarn – it does not wash out or degrade over time.
Q2: Is this fabric durable enough for sofa upholstery?
A2: Yes. The warp-knitted construction gives the fabric excellent tear resistance and dimensional stability – it holds its shape on the sofa frame and does not sag . The abrasion resistance is 10,000+ Martindale cycles, making it suitable for residential use . For heavy commercial use, we recommend the 280+ GSM version.
Q3: Is this fabric easy to care for?
A3: Yes. Polyester-spandex is machine-washable (30°C, gentle cycle), shrink-resistant, and colourfast . Do not use bleach. Do not use fabric softener – it can coat the fibres and flatten the pile over time. Tumble dry low or hang dry. Iron on the reverse side with a cool iron.
Q4: What is the MOQ for this fabric?
A4: 500-1000 meters per colour, depending on the exact specification. For stock colours, we can sometimes accept smaller quantities – ask us.
Q5: Can I get a physical colour card?
A5: Yes – and I recommend it. Screens cannot show the true pile texture and sheen of velvet accurately. We keep swatch rings for our stock colours. Free to request – you cover shipping.
Q6: Can I get a custom colour matched?
A6: Yes. Send us a reference – Pantone number, physical swatch, or photo – and our dye house matches it. Sample charge applies but is deducted from the final order.
Q7: Does the fabric pill over time?
A7: No. The fabric achieves a high pilling resistance rating (Grade 4+) . The warp-knitted structure locks the fibres in place, preventing fuzz balls from forming on the surface.
Q8: What is the difference between elastic velvet and Korean velvet?
A8: Korean velvet typically has a crushed or panne effect – the pile is flattened in one direction to create a lustrous sheen . Elastic velvet focuses on the stretch performance. Both are warp-knitted, but elastic velvet is engineered for applications where flexibility and recovery are the priority.
