What Makes Korean Velvet Different
Let me walk you through what this fabric actually is – and why it has become so popular.
● The "Korean" name.
The term "Korean velvet" is more about style than origin. It refers to a specific type of soft, plush velvet with a distinctive sheen and texture that has become a global trend . Some products are made in Korea, others are produced in China under the same name. The fabric itself is defined by its characteristics – not its country of origin.

● Crushed velvet / panne velvet effect.
Korean velvet is commonly referred to as crushed velvet . The "crush" effect comes from forcing the pile in one direction by applying heavy pressure . This creates a unique, lustrous surface that catches the light differently depending on the angle. Sometimes it's called panne velvet – a type of crushed velvet with the pile flattened in a single direction . The result is a fabric that looks luxurious and high-end, with a subtle shimmer that moves as the fabric moves.
● The stretch factor.
This fabric contains 4-5% Lycra spandex . The spandex gives it gentle 4-way stretch and excellent recovery – it stretches when you move and bounces back to shape when you let go . This makes it significantly more comfortable than traditional velvet for clothing, and easier to fit over curved furniture frames for upholstery.
● Warp-knitted construction.
The fabric is warp-knitted on tricot machines . Warp knitting interlocks yarns vertically, creating a fabric that is dimensionally stable – it does not stretch out of shape easily and resists snagging . The pile is firmly tied into the ground structure, which gives it good tear resistance and prevents shedding.
● Optional functions.
This fabric can be produced with various functional treatments: anti-pilling (we already achieve 4.5/5 rating), wicking/dry fit, UV protection, waterproof, anti-bacterial, and chlorine-resistant finishes are all available . High colourfastness is also standard – we test dark colours at 2.5-3 grade and light colours at 3-3.5 grade on the ISO scale.
● What our customers are using it for.
The range is broad. Fashion brands use this fabric for dresses, skirts, jackets, and loungewear – the stretch makes it comfortable, and the crushed velvet look gives garments a premium feel . Furniture makers use it for sofas and cushions – the durability and glamorous look add value to their showrooms . Interior designers use it for curtains and bedding . We also have customers using it for accessories, shoes, and even toys.

FAQ
Q1: Is Korean velvet the same as crushed velvet?
A1: The terms are often used interchangeably in the trade . Korean velvet is commonly referred to as crushed velvet because of its distinctive crushed appearance. Another name is panne velvet – a type of crushed velvet produced by forcing the pile in a single direction by applying heavy pressure.
Q2: Is Korean velvet fabric hard to clean?
A2: No, not at all. Pure velvet made from silk can be challenging to clean, but Korean velvet is made from a polyester-spandex blend, which is much easier to maintain . It is machine-washable on a gentle cycle (30°C) and resistant to fading and shrinking.
Q3: Is Korean velvet durable enough for upholstery?
A3: Yes. The 250 GSM weight is substantial enough for residential upholstery . The warp-knitted construction gives it tear resistance, and the polyester content makes it shrink-resistant and colourfast . The fabric also passes abrasion tests meeting ASTM D3885-19 standards.
Q4: What is the MOQ for this fabric?
A4: For solid colours: 500-1000 meters per colour . For printed versions: 1000 meters . We can sometimes accept smaller quantities for stock colours – ask us.
Q5: Can I get a physical colour card?
A5: Yes – and I recommend it. Screens cannot show the true sheen and texture of crushed velvet accurately. We keep swatch rings for our stock colours. Free to request – you cover shipping.
Q6: Can I get a custom colour matched?
A6: Absolutely, we're able to match custom shades for you. Simply share a color reference with our team - it can be a Pantone code, a physical fabric swatch, or a clear reference photo. Our in-house dyeing workshop will recreate the tone accurately. There will be a sampling fee for custom color development, yet this charge gets subtracted from your total bulk order payment later on.
Q7: Is the fabric easy to sew?
A7: Yes. It is relatively straightforward to sew if you use the right needle – we recommend a universal machine needle size 70/10, or a stretch needle if you are sewing velour. Pin and cut everything accurately because the pile makes it slightly slippery.
Q8: Does the crushed effect wash out?
A8: No. The crushed/panne effect is created during finishing by applying heavy pressure to the pile . It is a permanent finish – it does not wash out.
Q9: Does this Korean velvet fabric pill?
A9: No. The fabric achieves an anti-pilling rating of 4.5/5 on the ISO 12945-2 scale. That is excellent – the surface stays clean and free of fuzz balls over time.
Q10: How should I care for this fabric?
A10: Machine wash cold (30°C), gentle cycle, with mild detergent. Do not use bleach. Do not use fabric softener – it can coat the fibres and reduce the pile texture. Tumble dry low or hang dry. Iron on the reverse side with a cool iron. Avoid direct sunlight to prevent fading.
