Velvet Cushion Fabric – 200-450+GSM / 54-60″ / Plush Polyester Velvet for Cushions, Pillows & Throw Covers

Cushions are the one piece of upholstered furniture you can change easily. A new set of cushion covers can update an entire room without the cost or hassle of reupholstering a sofa. And when it comes to cushion fabrics, velvet is always in style.

Our Velvet Cushion Fabric is designed specifically for this purpose.

This is a 100% polyester velvet, available in a range of weights to suit different cushion applications – from lightweight 200 GSM for decorative throw pillows up to 450+ GSM for heavy-use sofa cushions. The fabric is soft, plush, and has that signature velvet sheen that catches the light and adds depth to any room.

Polyester velvet is the practical choice for cushions. It is naturally stain-resistant, easy to clean, and does not fade as quickly in sunlight . The dense pile is resistant to crushing – the cushions keep their plush look even with daily use. Unlike some other fabrics, velvet also hides dirt and wear well, making it a low-maintenance option for homes with children or pets.

The fabric is sold by the yard, with a typical width of 54-60 inches. This width allows for efficient cutting of cushion covers – you can get multiple cushion fronts from a single yard. We keep a wide range of stock colours, with custom colour matching available for larger orders.

Why Velvet Works For Cushions

Let me walk you through what makes velvet a great choice for cushions – and what to consider when choosing it.

● Velvet is practical, not just pretty.

The common perception is that velvet is delicate and high-maintenance. That is true for silk velvet. But polyester velvet is a different story. Polyester fibres are naturally strong, stain-resistant, and easy to care for. The tight weave also makes it resistant to snags from pet claws – pet hair tends to sit on the surface rather than becoming trapped. This is a key selling point for retail customers with pets.

● The pile matters.

The pile is the short cut fibres that stand up from the base fabric. A dense pile is what gives velvet its luxurious feel and rich colour. It also makes the fabric more durable – the pile fibres absorb friction before the base weave is affected. For cushions, you want a dense pile that resists crushing, especially if the cushions will be used daily.

● Colour depth.

Velvet takes dye exceptionally well. The pile structure creates subtle variations in colour as the light hits the fabric from different angles – this is what gives velvet its rich, dimensional look. The colour does not look flat the way it does on some other fabrics.

● What our customers are using it for.

The range is broad. Interior designers use velvet cushion fabric for accent pillows in living rooms and bedrooms – the plush texture adds warmth and sophistication. DIYers and crafters use it for cushion covers, bench cushions, and headboards. Furniture makers use it for decorative scatter cushions that come with sofas and armchairs.

Colour Options

We keep a wide range of stock colours for our Velvet Cushion Fabric:

● Neutrals.

Black, charcoal, navy, beige, cream, taupe, grey – the timeless classics that work with any interior scheme.

● Earth tones.

Olive, terracotta, rust, mustard, sage – warm, natural colours that are popular in contemporary interiors.

● Fashion shades.

Blush pink, dusty rose, emerald, teal, burgundy – colours that make a statement.

● Custom colours.

We match Pantone colours for bulk orders. The pile structure means colours can appear slightly different depending on the lighting, so we always recommend checking a physical sample before committing.

Care & Maintenance

These are the care instructions we recommend for velvet cushion fabric – based on manufacturer guidelines and industry best practice.

● Regular care.

Vacuum cushions regularly using a soft brush attachment on low suction to remove dust and debris. This is particularly important for velvet because dust can settle into the pile and make the fabric look dull over time.

● Spills – blot, do not rub.

Blot spills immediately with a dry, clean cloth or paper towel. Rubbing can force the liquid deeper into the pile and spread the stain. For water-based spills, lightly dab with a damp cloth, then blot dry.

● Do not use bleach or harsh chemicals.

These can damage the dyes and the pile structure. Use mild soapy water for spot cleaning if needed.

● Machine washing.

Many velvet cushion covers are machine-washable on a gentle cycle . We recommend turning the covers inside out before washing to protect the pile. Always test a sample first.

● Drying.

Air dry or tumble dry on low heat. High heat can damage the pile and cause shrinkage in some blends.

● Ironing.

If needed, iron on the reverse side with a cool iron. Do not iron directly on the pile – it will flatten the velvet.

FAQ

These are actual questions buyers have asked us about velvet cushion fabric.

Q1: Is velvet cushion fabric durable enough for daily use?

A1: Yes – when you choose the right weight. For daily-use sofa cushions and scatter cushions that are used regularly, we recommend 280 GSM or higher . The dense pile and tight weave resist crushing, and the fabric holds up well to repeated sitting and handling.

Q2: Is velvet cushion fabric machine-washable?

A2: Yes, many of our velvet cushion fabrics are machine-washable on a gentle cycle . We recommend turning the covers inside out before washing to protect the pile. Always test a sample first – washing can cause up to 1-2% shrinkage, and colours should be tested for bleeding.

Q3: How does velvet handle pet hair?

A3: Velvet handles pet hair well compared to many other fabrics. The tight weave means pet hair sits on the surface rather than becoming trapped in the fibres . A lint roller or vacuum with a soft brush attachment will remove most of it easily.

Q4: Does velvet pill over time?

A4: Our velvet cushion fabric achieves Grade 4-5 on the pilling scale – the highest rating . The dense pile and tight construction keep the fibres locked in place. Occasional pilling can occur as a result of normal wear and should not be considered a fault – but with this fabric, it is rare.

Q5: What is the difference between velvet and velour for cushions?

A5: Velvet is woven with a short, dense pile – typically up to 2 mm – and is more formal and structured. Velour is knitted with a longer pile – generally 2-4 mm – and has more give, making it more comfortable but less formal . For cushion covers, velvet is the more common choice.

Q6: Can I get a physical colour card or sample?

A6: Yes – and we recommend it. Screens cannot show the true softness, sheen, and pile texture of velvet accurately. We keep swatch rings for our stock colours. Free to request – you cover shipping.

Q7: What is the MOQ for this fabric?

A7: For stock colours, no minimum – you can order by the yard. For custom colours, the MOQ is typically 500-1,000 metres per colour. Bulk pricing is available for larger orders.

Q8: How is the fabric sold?

A8: Sold by the yard. The width is typically 54-60 inches . Multiple yards are cut as one continuous piece – for example, ordering 3 yards gives you a single 3-yard piece, not three separate pieces.

Q9: Can I use this fabric for both cushion covers and upholstery?

A9: Yes – the heavier weights (350 GSM and above) are suitable for both cushion covers and light upholstery such as headboards and dining chairs . For full sofa upholstery, we recommend our sofa-specific velvet fabrics, which are engineered for higher abrasion resistance.
